With over two decades of experience in mental health and education, Alison brings a unique blend of professional expertise and personal passion to her role as founder of Freeing the Outdoors. As a licensed psychotherapist and college professor, she has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of nature on mental health and human development.
Alison's academic credentials include a master's degree in clinical psychology, complemented by extensive clinical experience at prestigious institutions including Johns Hopkins, where she developed innovative treatment programs and provided comprehensive mental health services. Her work in the Special Needs Clinic and emergency psychiatric care has given her valuable insight into the diverse needs of varying communities.
A dedicated advocate for experiential learning and outdoor education, Alison has spent the past decade implementing these principles both professionally and personally. Her advocacy for accessible outdoor experiences has garnered significant attention, building a community of over 44,000 followers who share her vision of nature-based education and family engagement.
The inspiration for Freeing the Outdoors emerged while writing her first book, Virginia and Maryland 50 Hikes with Kids (Timber Press, 2024). Through this work, she identified critical barriers preventing many families from accessing outdoor spaces, including financial constraints, transportation challenges, and limited accessibility for individuals with disabilities. This realization sparked her mission to make nature accessible to all communities.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Alison's commitment to community service extends to her personal life, where she and her husband serve as foster parents. This experience has deepened her understanding of the vital importance of creating inclusive, accessible outdoor spaces for families of all backgrounds.
Under Alison's leadership, Freeing the Outdoors works to eliminate barriers to outdoor access, ensuring that nature's benefits are available to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
